Is Your Phone eSIM-Compatible?

eSIM support is not guaranteed — even on flagship phones. It depends on your exact model, the regional variant, and sometimes your carrier. This guide shows you how to check any phone in under a minute, with concrete answers for the models travelers ask about most: OnePlus, Oppo, iQOO, and beyond.

The 30-second compatibility check

  1. Dial *#06# in your phone app. If an EID number appears alongside the IMEI, the hardware supports eSIM.
  2. Look in Settings. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or Connections → SIM manager). An "Add eSIM" option means support.
  3. Search your exact model — including regional variant (e.g. "OnePlus 8T IN2015 eSIM"). Support differs between the US, EU, Indian and Chinese versions of the same phone.

Don't forget the lock. A carrier-locked phone rejects third-party eSIM profiles even when the hardware supports them. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock on iPhone, or ask your carrier.

OnePlus: does the 8T support eSIM?

The OnePlus 8T does not support eSIM in any region. OnePlus added eSIM support starting with the OnePlus 9 series in selected markets (mainly North America). Rules of thumb:

  • OnePlus 8 series, 7 series and older: no eSIM — no variant supports it.
  • OnePlus 9 through 15 series (US & some EU variants): yes.
  • Indian and Chinese OnePlus variants: generally no eSIM, even on recent flagships. Always verify with *#06#.
  • Nord and R series: mixed by market — verify per unit.

Oppo: which phones support eSIM?

Oppo's eSIM support is tied to model line and market:

  • Find X flagships (Find X5 and newer, global/EU variants): yes.
  • Reno series (selected European models): yes on several recent generations.
  • A series (A58, A78, A98…): no — the budget line ships without eSIM hardware in nearly all markets.

So: the Oppo A58 does not support eSIM. If your daily phone is an A-series Oppo, run the *#06# EID test to be sure, but expect to use a physical travel SIM. European-bought Find X and Reno owners are usually in luck.

iQOO: does the iQOO 15R have eSIM?

It depends on where the unit was sold. Indian and international iQOO units typically include eSIM (the iQOO 15 and 15R included), while Chinese-market units usually don't. Nokia: does the Nokia X20 support eSIM?

No — the Nokia X20 does not support eSIM. It carries dual physical nano-SIM slots only. HMD (the company behind Nokia phones) has shipped eSIM mainly on selected newer 5G and enterprise-focused models, so if you carry a different Nokia, the *#06# EID check is the honest answer — most classic Nokia smartphones predate eSIM entirely.

Do flip phones support eSIM?

Two very different kinds of "flip phone":

  • Foldable flip smartphones — Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series, Motorola Razr series: yes, full eSIM support like any flagship.
  • Classic flip feature phones (basic 4G flips, KaiOS-style devices): almost never — no eSIM hardware, no remote SIM provisioning.

If you travel with a basic flip as a backup phone, plan on physical SIMs for it — or hotspot from your main phone.

The same logic applies to travel-eSIM apps: AloSIM compatible devices, for example, are simply eSIM-capable, unlocked phones — the app's device list is a curated mirror of the EID test, nothing more.

Carrier "compatible phones" lists: Optimum Mobile, Helium Mobile, Infimobile

US bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) carriers publish the same kind of list:

  • Optimum Mobile compatible phones — any unlocked GSM phone works; recent iPhones (XS+) and Pixels (3+) support Optimum's eSIM activation; most Androids activate via physical SIM.
  • Helium Mobile phone compatibility — Helium runs on T-Mobile's network plus its own 5G crowd-grid; iPhones and recent Pixel/Samsung flagships pass their checker, and eSIM-capable unlocked devices generally activate without issue.
  • Infimobile compatible phones — standard MVNO rules: unlocked phone, compatible network bands, and an EID if you want eSIM delivery instead of a mailed SIM card.

The universal test never changes: EID present + phone unlocked = carrier or travel eSIM will activate. The carrier's page just tells you which phones they've tested, not which ones physically can.

What about BYOP / bring-your-own-phone plans?

BYOP eSIM plans (bring your own phone — common with US carriers like Mint, Visible or US Mobile) work exactly like travel eSIMs from a technical standpoint: they install a carrier profile over an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone. The same check applies: EID present + phone unlocked = BYOP eSIM will activate.

My phone shows an EID but no "Add eSIM" in settings. Your carrier's software build may hide the menu, or the phone is locked. Update iOS/Android to the latest version and confirm the phone is unlocked.

Do dual-SIM phones support eSIM plus a physical SIM at the same time? Yes — that's the standard setup: physical SIM for your home number, eSIM for travel data.

Can I check compatibility with IMEI only? IMEI lookup sites can hint at eSIM support, but the EID (*#06#) is the definitive hardware signal.
